Ten years of savings

Cycle Scheme

Want to save money, do your bit for the environment, and avoid the Sellafield commuter traffic? Then the ever popular Cycle to Work scheme could be just the thing for you.

Now in its tenth year, the scheme allows employees to sacrifice some of their salary in return for a brand new, tax-free bike.

The scheme has benefitted more than 5000 employees over the last ten years, and we hope that this year’s scheme will be just as popular, as employees realise the potential benefits of choosing the bike for their commute.

In 2015, we were recognised as the English Employer of the Year by Cyclescheme in recognition of our commitment to both cycling and the fantastic saving scheme for our employees.

To further encourage take up this year, we’re also encouraging employees to take part in the national Cycle to Work Day on 13 September. On the day, anyone pledging bike miles through the Cyclescheme website will be entered into a prize draw to win prizes including a holiday, a tablet, bikes and accessories.

The 2017 scheme will operate from 17 July to 15 September. Applications can be made through the Sellafield Ltd portal at www.cyclescheme.co.uk/651d03 or through the HR intranet page.

A number of local bike shops are holding open days and evenings to allow employees to see and test out their range of bikes, prior to making their purchase. Some of the shops will also be providing free gifts and other incentives to those considering or making a purchase.

All of the shops below will be open until 8pm on the days listed:

• Ainfield Cycle Centre, Cleator: Saturday 22 July
• Keswick Bikes: Friday 28 July
• Cyclewise, Cockermouth: Thursday 3 August

Viv Winter, Chair of the Sellafield Ltd cycle group said:  “The Cycle to Work Scheme provides a great opportunity to either get into cycling and save money buying your first bike or for existing cyclists, to upgrade to a newer model or buy accessories or training equipment.

“With its proven health benefits, cycling continues to increase in popularity – especially in an amazing part of the country like this, with National Cycle Network routes and brilliant cycling clubs on our doorstep.

“Commuting to and from work by bike on either the roads or on cycle paths can save time, avoid traffic queues and parking issues we face, as well as being environmentally friendly and supportive of the local community.”

How the scheme works

By taking part, you can choose a new bike and/or accessories up to the value of £1000, which you hire from Sellafield over 12 months by reducing your gross salary.

You save money because your payment comes out of your salary before Tax and National Insurance deductions. This is known as ‘salary sacrifice’ and the saving is usually between 20 – 30%.

Employees apply online using the Sellafield company code 651d03 and, once approved, vouchers are issued within two weeks.

Please note that the repayment also includes a 4% finance charge.
