New Pond for Yottenfews
Year two pupils from Gosforth School were recently selected to open a new pond at the
Yottenfews project, Sellafield.
The official opening ceremony which was held on World Environment Day welcomed the pupils, their teachers, members of the Yottenfews Education Project and a team from Sellafield’s Fire and
Rescue Team who came along to fill the pond. “The pond took four weeks to build using redundant sandstone from an old barn at Yottenfews” said Millie Clarke, Yottenfews Environmental Education Project Co-ordinator.
“I would like to thank everyone involved in this project for their help and support. The opening of a new pond at Yottenfews depicts what the project is all about; the bringing together of children and adults with wildlife and the enjoyment and learning of the outdoors whilst having fun.
Thus, it seemed very appropriate to open the new pond on World Environment Day.
“The local children visiting the Project all love to pond dip and it is a great addition to any area or garden for the wildlife and for people to enjoy.” Liz Coverley, class two teacher added: “In the 20 years that I’ve been coming to Yottenfews I’ve seen it develop so much. We try and bring the
children here twice a year as they love it so much and because it fits in with the curriculum.”
