Kids' art brightens up demolition site
A REGENERATION project in Egremont got off to a colourful start in December thanks to a Sellafield Ltd supported exhibition of local artwork.
Sellafield Ltd’s head of public affairs, Shirley Williams, explained: “We have sponsored the production of a series of photographic panels featuring artwork produced by local young people and people from the Egremont Youth Works. The 13 laminated panels are being displayed on the hoardings around the site of the old Castle Cinema building in Egremont.”
The project, being run by the Egremont Regeneration Partnership in conjunction with West Lakes Renaissance, Copeland Borough Council and Creative Egremont, was initiated following the demolition of the castle the demolition of the cinema.
The Partnership wanted the site to remain secure, so hoardings were erected to ensure safety along the footpath on the Bookwell Road running down to the Main Street in Egremont.
Shirley added: “This project offers local people from Egremont the opportunity to do something creative for their community, for the area that they live in. I speak on behalf of the company when I say that it is a delight to be able to help the community in this way.”
Cllr Elaine Woodburn, Chair of The Egremont Regeneration Partnership, added: “The regeneration Partnership in Egremont is extremely grateful for Sellafield’s interest in our community and their kind donation of resources and expertise that have helped make this project happen. Co-operative collaboration like this really makes it possible for many community and socially beneficial projects of this nature to be realized that otherwise would never come to fruition.”
