Community support

We have a long history of supporting our local communities. Working with the NDA our socio-economic plans encourage employee involvement in local activities, charitable donation schemes and inward investment.

Greedy pigs!

A group of Sellafield workers are taking part in a competition to see who can eat the most ‘pigs in blankets’ in 10 minutes in a bid to raise at least £1000 for charity.

Nicholas Bulman, Allan Bruce and Glen Boylan are all vowing to stuff their faces with as many ‘pigs in blankets’ as they can in order to raise money for Kirk Courty, a Workington youngster who has been in the Carlisle Infirmary in a state of minimal awareness for seven years following a serious accident.

The event will be taking place on December 28 at the Sailors Return Pub in Maryport. Thirteen entrants, each representing a different public house in West Cumbria, will be sponsored by customers from the respective pub that he/she is representing.

Three Sellafield Ltd workers are taking up the challenge, and will be trying hard not to over-indulge on the big day, so they still have room for the pigs in blankets three days later.

Speaking about the upcoming challenge, Allan, a Health Physics Monitor said: “We are really looking forward to this challenge.

“Last year I took part in a ‘bush tucker trial’ competition which involved eating everything from fish eyes to scorpions so at least this year the food is going to be a bit more tasty!

“It should be a good laugh and hopefully we’ll raise lots of money for Kirk and the other patients on the ward who are really in need of our support, especially at this time of year."

As well as winning £200 to spend in their own local pub, the greediest ‘pigs in blankets’ eater will also receive a ‘Pigs in Blankets Eating champ 2007-2008’ T-shirt.

The rest of the money will go towards buying modern audio equipment for Kirk and talking books for people in similar circumstances on the ward.

This will be the fourth whacky event organised by the ‘Xtreme 13’ team. Other fundraising events organised by the group have included:
- 13 lakes swim which raised £3500 for Macmillan Cancer Support,
- A bakers dozen Macabre menu in which people were sponsored to eat 13 items including fish eyes, chocolate covered scorpions and giant wood ants raising £2300 for Leukaemia research
- 13 lochs swim which involved swimming in 13 lochs including Loch Lomond which raised £4000 for Cancer Research UK.
