We deliver an integrated nuclear waste management programme which seeks to reduce waste volumes arising as part of our current activities as well as historic operations, ensuring that waste is stored safely, minimising the risk to the public and environment.
Early waste management activities at Sellafield involved the storage of untreated waste from the first generation reprocessing operations associated with the military programme which took place on the site during the 1950s.
Waste arising from the programme was historically held in ponds and silos with no plans for future treatment and disposal.
Our task today is to retrieve and process this material as well as to safely manage nuclear waste which is produced as a result of our current operations.
The following section sets out our programmes for the management of effluents, intermediate level waste and low and sub low level waste.
For information on our highly active waste management programme please refer to the HAL workstream section.
