Spent Fuel Management at Sellafield includes the reprocessing of spent Magnox nuclear fuel from stations across the UK and also the reprocessing spent oxide fuel from overseas customers.
Reprocessing takes used fuel which has been removed from a nuclear reactor to recover the reusable materials. After about four years in a reactor the fuel becomes less efficient. Reprocessing allows 97% of this used fuel to be recycled back into new fuel.
Spent Fuel Management also includes the storage of Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor fuel and the operation of our Wet Inlet Facility.
