Sellafield Site Decommissioning achievements

  • Caesium Extraction Plant has been successfully fully remotely decommissioned
  • Redundant pipebridge linking the First Generation Plant and the Solvent Purification Plant removed

The 1950s Caesium Extraction Plant which produced radioactive sources for metal industry has been successfully fully remotely decommissioned, a first for Sellafield Ltd.

A redundant pipebridge linking the First Generation Plant and the Solvent Purification Plant has been successfully removed ahead of schedule with a £1.3 million efficiency saving.

Contaminated ventilation has also been removed from the redundant Plutonium Purification Plant using a purpose-built bespoke facility.

The Resident Engineer’s office has been demolished after 50 years of service, the 10 week programme resulted in the clearance of 565 tonnes of material from the Sellafield site.
