Emergency Preparedness

At Sellafield Ltd, emergency preparedness is integral to our entire operations.

As part of our operating license, Sellafield Ltd maintains a robust and multi-faceted emergency response programme.

This includes a security guard force, armed police force, and a fully equipped fire station with full time fire fighters, ambulance service and emergency response teams capable of round-the-clock response.

How does Sellafield Ltd prepare for potential emergencies?

We are responsible for the safe operations of the Sellafield site at all times and as such ensure we have robust arrangements in place to respond to the unlikely event a major incident on site.

The effectiveness of our emergency response programme is continuously assessed through a series of emergency exercises, locally and nationally.

We routinely test our emergency arrangements through training and response exercises, these exercises react to many scenarios including accidents, radiological releases and security threats.

The scenarios are agreed with the Office of Nuclear Regulation (ONR) and test both the management of an incident as well as the employee response.

Many exercises are also carried out in conjunction with other agencies such as the Civil Nuclear Constabulary, the Environment Agency, Cumbria Police and Cumbria County Council.

Community Emergency Management

The Radiation (Emergency Preparedness and Public Information) Regulations 2001 (REPPIR) established a framework for the protection of the public through emergency preparedness for accidents with the potential to affect members of the public. It requires the provision of information to the public in advance in situations where a radiation emergency might arise and during any kind of radiation emergency.

Cumbria County Council and Sellafield Ltd coordinate and publish an emergency information booklet which is now distributed to all properties within a approximate 6km radius of the Sellafield site.

The booklet gives advice on what to do in the event of a serious emergency at the Sellafield site and is independently monitored by H.M. Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII):
