Beach Monitoring
Background
The Environment Agency has placed a statutory requirement on Sellafield for monitoring of beaches between Ravenglass and St Bees using vehicle mounted monitoring equipment. The monitoring work will take place during daylight hours depending on weather and tides and is expected to last until end of March 2008. The work is being done by NUKEM on behalf of Sellafield Ltd. If NUKEM detect anything during the monitoring they will retrieve it and deliver it to Sellafield for analysis.
Challenge
This type of monitoring has been carried out since November 2006 when the equipment was trialed on local beaches. The report summarising the results of earlier monitoring can be found in the media centre section. Fortnightly updates of locations covered and any finds will be placed here with more detailed reports being provided once analysis of finds is complete.
Fortnightly Update 12 May 2008.
We must stress that beaches remain safe to use for the duration of the monitoring.
