British Nuclear Group, the nuclear site management, decommissioning and clean-up specialist, this week completed the clean-up of historic liquid waste from one of the oldest plants at Sellafield, while preventing more than 44 years of radioactive discharges to sea and saving taxpayers up to £300m in potential new building costs.

British Nuclear Group has just awarded a £118 million contract to support services and construction company Carillion plc. The contract is to complete the phase two work of the Sellafield Product and Residue Store (SPRS) at Sellafield. This contract is the first major construction contract to be let since the formation of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, for whom British Nuclear Group now manages and operates the Sellafield site.

Emptying of one of Sellafield’s Highly Active Storage Tanks (HAST) two years ahead of schedule has been successfully achieved. The transfer of the last 59 cubic metres of liquor from HAST 4, equivalent to 1,500te of historic Magnox reprocessing, took place in two stages during January and May, and required careful coordination of a number of safety factors, both conventional and radiological, and operational constraints.
