NEBOSH is no bother for Hayley

Congratulations to Hayley Hebson, environmental advisor Sellafield Ltd who has won the Martin Bessant Award for the highest achievement in the NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) specialist diploma in Environmental Management.

Monte Carlo Users Group - 14th Annual Conference

Sellafield Ltd hosted the 14th Annual Conference of the UK Monte Carlo Users Group (MCNEG 2008) at the Birchwood Conference Centre at Risley. Some 80 delegates from 8 countries attended with 20% attendance from overseas. These delegates are working in the field of nuclear codes and data, twenty four scientific and technical papers were presented during the conference. Chair of the organising committee, Paul Hulse said, “Monte Carlo codes are used in a number of applications, Sellafield Ltd use them in criticality and shielding assessments in support of safety cases. More widely they are used for planning radiotherapy treatments in cancer therapy, design of instruments for space vehicles, reactor design, etc.”

Changes to the Sounding of the Sellafield Emergency Siren

FROM 1st MAY 2008 the arrangements for sounding the site emergency siren will change. For many years the arrangements have been that the site siren would only be sounded when a Sellafield emergency has occurred. This is an incident on site that has or is likely to affect members of the public off site. It is the most serious incident on the site and would require members of the public in the vicinity to take urgent action to protect themselves.

Sellafield Ltd has now launched their 17th North West Newspaper Awards with prize money totalling £5,000 across seven categories.  The awards, sponsored by Sellafield Ltd and organised through the North West Region of the Society of Editors, are given in recognition of the best journalists and newspapers throughout Cumbria, Cheshire, Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside.

Windscale Transition

Today sees the integration of the Windscale site with the Sellafield site. This follows over a year of preparatory work to ensure necessary licence arrangements are in place to allow the transfer to happen smoothly.

Thorp restart

We started to shear fuel on 28 January for what is the second campaign of fuel since Thorp was shutdown in April 2005. Approximately 1te of fuel was sheared before the elevator which takes the fuel from the feed pond to the shear cave failed and production had to be stopped. The work has now been completed to get the plant back up and running again.

Peter Bainbridge, a manufacturing engineer in the Vitrification Plant, has just become the hundredth candidate to complete an NVQ in Business Improvement techniques, at the same time becoming the first person in Cumbria to gain the award at level four – the most prestigious on offer.

Work starts on clearing Calder Hall tower rubble

SATURDAY 29 September 2007 saw the safe and successful explosive demolition of the four cooling towers at Calder Hall. Although this was the end of the highly visible demolition work, the arduous task of cleaning up the colossal 20,000 tonnes of rubble was just beginning.

LTA success for Capenhurst

Workers at our Capenhurst site have delivered more than 1.5 million man hours of work – equivalent to more than four years, without a single Lost Time Accident (LTA). Capenhurst’s ‘Safety First’ campaign is a unique approach to health and safety, which allows employees on the shop floor, not managers, to be largely responsible for keeping hazards around the site under control – while all the time undertaking some of the biggest demolition projects in the North West.

INS Achieve Major Milestone in Safety Performance

INS has achieved a full 12 months without a Days Away Case, giving us a Days Away Case Rate (DACR) of zero. DACR is a measure defined by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and has been adopted across the BNFL Group as the primary measure of conventional safety performance.

The Future of Nuclear Power? Government Consultation

The government announcement is an exciting major milestone for the nuclear industry, West Cumbria and Sellafield Ltd. Sellafield Ltd will not be directly involved in the build and operation of new reactors as this is expected to be undertaken by electricity generating companies. These companies will consider where and when to invest subject to a range of regulatory approvals, including the acceptability of suitable sites. New build on land adjacent to the existing Sellafield Site may be attractive to these companies, as well as the local skills, experience and support of the local community as voiced through responses to the recent consultation on new nuclear build.
