Rescue submarine technology helps engineers save years on Sellafield clean-up

British Nuclear Group awards ?118m contract
British Nuclear Group has just awarded a £118 million contract to support services and construction company Carillion plc. The contract is to complete the phase two work of the Sellafield Product and Residue Store (SPRS) at Sellafield. This contract is the first major construction contract to be let since the formation of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, for whom British Nuclear Group now manages and operates the Sellafield site.

Progress on Sellafield Legacy Ponds Project
Extending support rails over one of Sellafield's legacy ponds is a significant step toward removing the remaining waste inventory from the storage pond using a Sludge Retrieval Machine (SRM).

Further update on the Thorp Feed Clarification Cell
British Nuclear Group has today published the full Board of Inquiry report into the fractured pipe in the Feed Clarification Cell in Thorp. The incident, which we first reported nine weeks ago, has highlighted several areas where improvements are needed. These are comprehensively dealt with in the report. Barry Snelson, Managing Director at Sellafield said: “By their very nature Boards of Inquiry seek to get to the root cause of an incident. The report produced is written in a no-nonsense style, to ensure that we learn real lessons from whatever has happened. We will systematically address and resolve every issue raised in this report. There is no room for complacency in our industry and I will personally be ensuring that these recommendations are implemented in Thorp and across Sellafield.”

Thorp Feed Clarification Cell Update
On 22 April, British Nuclear Group reported that a pipe had failed in one of the heavily shielded cells, known as the feed clarification cell, in the Thorp Head End plant at Sellafield resulting in a quantity of dissolved nuclear fuel being released into a sealed, contained area.

Sealine recovery project
This significant work involved removal of man made items which have supported the pipelines for over 50 years. A total of approximately 1500 tonnes of concrete and steel used to locate the pipes on the beach have also been removed.

THORP Feed Clarification Cell
The discovery was made after a camera inspection of the cell, which is a stainless steel totally secure environment and specifically designed to withstand such pipe failures. There is no risk to employees, the local community or the environment.

Tunnel roof removal
A vital part of the Solid Waste Storage Silo decommissioning project at Sellafield was completed four weeks early and with no lost-time accidents for over six years when the team successfully removed the building's tunnel roof.

World first for Sellafield's Floc Retrieval Plant
In a world-leading decomissioning project at Sellafield, British Nuclear Group has pumped hundreds of cubic metres of radioactive waste from a tank where it has been stored for the last fifty years. It is the latest stage in a project several years in the planning and one which will take a further twelve years to fully complete, when the radioactive waste from all six tanks in the Primary Sludge complex will have been removed and processed.
