Barry Snelson MBE, Managing Director

Barry graduated as a Mechanical Engineer from Liverpool University, he then spent four years in the Royal Navy (as an engineer). He spent two years as an associate on the Teaching Company Scheme at Vickers Ltd, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. He joined Capenhurst in 1980 as Production Engineer in the centrifuge plants. He then went to Springfields from 1985 to 1999 in a variety of development, design and production management roles, including a two year secondment to the DTI in London. When he left to move to Sellafield he was Head of the Magnox Fuel Business. He was Head of Operations Magnox Reprocessing from 1999 to June 2002 when he became Director of Operations for the Sellafield site. In the Company re-organisation on 1 May 2004 he was appointed to the position of Chief Operations Officer and following the retirement of Brian Watson on 31 July 2004 Barry succeeded him in the position of Managing Director, Management Services Sellafield.

Peter Lutwyche, Director Nuclear Decommissioning & Major Projects Group

Peter joined BNFL in September 1986 in R&DD and has worked in technical support, commissioning and production management of effluent plants. In February 1997 Peter was appointed as Special Assistant to the Chief Executive (John Taylor) and in November 1997 was appointed as Head of Human Resources in THORP. Peter moved to the role of Head of Operations and Compliance for the site in September 1999, and then Head of Operations for Waste Retrievals and Decommissioning in August 2001. In July 2004, Peter was appointed to the role of Programme Director and in September 2007 moved to his current post as Director of Nuclear Decommissioning and Major Projects Group in Sellafield Ltd.

Steve Morgan, Commercial and Contract Management Director

With more than 30 years in or around the nuclear market and after completing five years with BNFL Inc. heading the Contracting and Procurement function, Steve was selected as Sellafield Commercial Director in early 2004 to help lead British Nuclear Group's operations at Sellafield into a new Management and Operations (M&O) commercial way of doing business. Career highlights include:
- Head of Contracting for Westinghouse and Fluor at Hanford, the largest U.S. nuclear clean up site, where he negotiated the first M&O performance-based contract that resulted in nearly $200 million in savings to the customer and a tripling of contractor fee.
- U.S. Navy Rear Admiral at the 42,000-employee U.S. Defence Logistics Agency where he was responsible for Logistics Management and led privatisation/organisational reengineering initiatives resulting in more than $200 million in savings.
- Chief Financial Officer for a privately owned shipbuilding company.
- Executive Vice President of a submarine reactor core fabrication company.
- 10-years of service with the American company, United Nuclear Corporation, where his assignments included being:
- President of a new environmental clean up company
- Vice president of an M&O company overseeing D&D projects and programs
- Business development director where he conducted mergers and acquisitions, turned around or divested under performing companies and led major competitive proposal teams.
- 5 - years with the U.S. Department of Energy where he was responsible for, among other things, procurement competition, project financial incentives and fee/profit policy.
- Active duty with the U.S. Nuclear Navy as a submarine officer.
- MBA from George Washington University in Contract and Project Management.

Chris Philipsborn, Director Sellafield Communications

Chris, 42, was born in the US and grew up in France, Brussels and the UK. He graduated from the London School of Economics and worked as a Parliamentary aide before training as a print journalist in Cumbria. He briefly covered Parliament as a Lobby correspondent before reporting for The Economist, BBC World Service and the Financial Times from Latin America in the early 1990s.
On his return to the UK he ran a successful campaign to amend UK Pensions legislation for a top ten NGO, before going on to run the Law Society of England and Wales' Parliamentary Unit for three years. He joined BT Group in 1998, first as Senior UK Public Affairs Adviser, then as Head of European Public Affairs. This was followed by a four year stint in Brussels as Head of European Corporate Affairs, where he covered BT Global Services operations across 14 countries. In 2006, Chris joined the Salzburg Global Seminar, a distinguished foreign policy institute founded in 1947, as Europe Director. Chris became Director of Communications at Sellafield Ltd in Oct 2007.

John Storer, Production Operations Director

John joined BNFL in August 1981 directly from the University of Birmingham where he studied Chemical Engineering. His initial appointment was as Shop Manager in the Magnox Reprocessing plants. Subsequently he spent a period of time providing technical support to the Thorp design teams before returning to operations as B205 Shift Manager. A series of commissioning posts in Thorp Chemical Plants followed prior to his appointment as Head of Chemical plants, Thorp Group in March 1996. In September 1999 John was appointed as Head of the MOX Business Unit. Following a major review of the Sellafield site, John was asked to establish a new Operating Unit to cover all Solid Waste Facilities at Sellafield and the Drigg Site in May 2001. In August 2003 following further organisational review John was appointed Head of Operations Waste Treatment and Decommissioning. In October 2003 John started an international secondment with BNFL Inc in Idaho Falls, USA as Business Manager on the AMWTP project. John is a Fellow of the Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Jon Seddon, Finance Director

Jon Seddon is experienced in a wide variety of industries both in the public and private sector. Jon started his career in the printing and packaging industry with Metal Box, moving onto manufacturing with Dunlop Group, retail, service and distribution with Dixons Group and aerospace and communications with BAe Systems and the Lattice Group. Jon was Finance Director of the Highways Agency during the nineties, implementing major business change programmes, Finance and IT systems development, significant PFI delivery and a fundamental review of England’s road programme.
Jon qualified as an accountant in 1981 and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. A family man, married with four children, Jon has a keen interest in trekking to remote places alongside classic and modern motorcycles.

Dave Mason, Director Environment, Health, Safety and Quality

Dave has worked in the nuclear industry for over 30 years in nuclear power plant operations in the UK, as a senior nuclear regulator and latterly as Director for EHS&Q for Magnox Electric and currently Sellafield Ltd. His experience includes the regulation of nuclear power and propulsion systems, waste management and decommissioning and nuclear chemical plant. He was UK article 37 expert on radioactive wastes, a member of the UK Radioactive Waste Policy Group and has extensive experience of human and organisational factors in safety management. He has worked successfully on stakeholder dialogue involving major pressure groups, raised the profile and achieved recognition for environmental performance, set the agenda for nuclear operational excellence and underpinned strategic programmes for effective safety improvements for both Magnox Electric and Sellafield Ltd.
Dave is qualified to degree level in Pure and Applied Physics and Radiological Health and Safety. He is a member of the Institute of Directors and Society for Radiological Protection. He is Vice-Chair of the Major Hazards Group of the Institute of Occupational Health and Safety.

Paul Foster, Director Strategy & Transition

Paul joined BNFL in October 2000 as Head of Maintenance & Infrastructure Services after 12 years in the steel industry with Corus.
He has held a variety of operations posts across the Sellafield Site, including Head of Site Services (2002), Head of Manufacturing for Magnox East River (2003), Operating Unit Head for Encapsulation & Effluent Plants (2004) and Operating Unit Head for MOX (2005), before his current appointment to Director Strategy & Transition in September 2007. He is a Materials Science Graduate, a Chartered Engineer and has an MBA from Warwick University.
Jim Gibson, Director Capability

Jim Gibson joined the Sellafield Executive in May 2006. He joined the company from Rolls-Royce where he was Director of Human Resources for Compression Systems, an operations business with seven UK sites, two overseas operations and a joint venture in the Middle East.
Previously he has worked in the food industry and in the steel industry. Jim is a graduate of Caledonian University and an MBA graduate of Glasgow University Business School. Professionally he is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

Neil Longfellow, Director Commercial Recycling Operations

Neil joined British Nuclear Group in 1991 following an early career in electrical engineering. He now has over sixteen years experience in the management of nuclear plant operations and spent fuel transport on the Sellafield site.
As Production Manager for Thorp Fuel Services, Neil successfully led the re-start of spent fuel transports from Europe to Sellafield which resumed in 2001 after a 3-year embargo. He then successfully managed the return of the MOX fuel from Japan to Sellafield, bringing him into contact with overseas customers, regulators and key political stakeholders. Subsequent appointments included Head of Operations, Waste Treatment Plants, followed by Head of Operations, Magnox Reprocessing and Calder Hall.
In 2004 Neil moved into Commercial Operations directorate and in May 2005 was appointed Director MOX Fuel Business where he has responsibility for the delivery of customer contracts, operation, engineering and asset care of the Sellafield MOX Plant (SMP). Neil now leads the directorate for Commercial Recycling operations for Sellafield site which includes Thorp Reprocessing and SMP.

Phil Malem, Head of Capenhurst site

Phil, 33, is the Head of the Capenhurst nuclear site, near to Chester which is part of Sellafield Ltd. In this role he is responsible for leading and directing all aspects of the decommissioning and uranic storage operations and the development of the site’s future long term strategy.
Phil joined the Company in 1990 on the Business and Commercial development programme where he undertook various roles in commercial, marketing and contract management. In 1998, Phil joined the International Nuclear Services team as Commercial Manager responsible for managing Japanese and French commercial contracts.
Phil was invited to work alongside the Sellafield Managing Director, as Special Assistant in 2002 as part of his development programme. This role provided experience of leadership, evaluating business performance, safety, operations and managing strategy. In 2004, Phil was appointed to the position of Head of Sellafield Transition, a newly created role to establish and lead the transition of the site from owner operator to contractor following the creation of the NDA. Phil moved to his current position at Capenhurst in July 2005.
Phil graduated from Manchester University with a BA (Hons) degree in Business Studies and completed the Leadership Programme at Harvard Business School in 2007.
