Sellafield Ltd is carrying out an investigation into an incident within the site’s Fuel Handling Plant.
A crane driver who was removing an empty flask from a maintenance facility noticed that a gamma gate door, that should have been closed, was open.
It was further noted that the flask door was not attached to the flask itself. The driver, on recognising the issue, immediately replaced the flask on the gamma gate.
There were no environmental implications and no one was hurt. However, operations were paused pending the outcome of a detailed investigation. Those operations have since re-commenced.
Regulators have been informed and the incident has been given a provisional level one rating on the International Nuclear Event Scale
