Dr Mike Weightman final report published - Fukushima and the UK nuclear industry
Sellafield Ltd welcomes the publication of Dr Weightman’s final report into the events at the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan in March this year.
We have, since the interim report was published in May this year, been working with organisations both nationally and internationally in ensuring the required learning is absorbed industry wide.
In particular, we welcome the findings that the events at Fukushima reinforce the need to continue to pursue decommissioning of former nuclear sites with utmost vigour and determination. This is an area we have seen some real progress in this year and will continue to accelerate work as we deliver the commitments in our performance plan.
We also acknowledge the other findings within the report including the UK practice of periodic safety reviews of licensed sites provides a robust means of ensuring continuous improvement in line with advances in technology and standards. We will continue to work closely with regulators and stakeholders to achieve these standards.
Whilst recognising that the UK is not expected to experience the kind of seismic or environmental events that hit Japan in March, we will study this final report in detail and are fully committed to applying relevant learning regarding our operations.
Safety is, and will continue to be, Sellafield Ltd’s number one priority.
