Solo Sailor

Neil sails the Irish Sea to support his local community

Imagine two weeks at sea on your own with limited sailing experience! Well Sellafield Ltd employee, Neil Braine has just completed this fantastic challenge for charity.

Neil a project engineer, EHS&Q has single handedly sailed 300 miles across the Irish Sea to raise money for Hospice at Home West Cumbria with no support boat or assistance.

The solo passage started in Whitehaven and consisted of four legs: Whitehaven to and around the Isle of Man; the Isle of Man to Northern Ireland; Northern Ireland to Port Patrick, Scotland and finally back from Port Patrick to Whitehaven.

Neil said: “I really wanted to do something personally challenging for charity and when the opportunity to use a boat presented itself I thought solo sailing would be a great idea. I have learnt an incredible amount during the past two weeks and although at times it was extremely difficult and exhausting I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone who has sponsored me and my friends, family and colleagues for all their support.

“The charity and its people do absolutely amazing work to support the terminally ill and their families, right across West Cumbria. They do receive some funding from the NHS, but weekly there is a shortfall of £7,500. The work they do is so important and your help to maintain this amazing service is really needed. “
