Girls in Engineering event
Sellafield based engineers Jen Corbett and Claire Jones recently helped pave the way for more girls to become the engineers of tomorrow.
The mechanically minded duo organised a successful Girls in Engineering event on behalf of the Institution of Mechanical Engineer (IMechE) giving 15-16 year old girls the chance to discover more about what engineering is really like, and how they can apply what they learn to the real world.
Over 75 girls and teachers attended the event at Energus which was sponsored by Nuclear Management Partners (NMP).
Claire, MER Projects, Project Engineer – IMechE Young Members Board Chair said: “The students engaged really well. We really wanted to get the girls thinking about what they enjoy at school and how applying this to engineering can be genuinely fun and interesting.”
Jen, Sellafield Ltd Reprocessing Integrated Work Management – IMechE Young Members Board Vice Chair added: “We received a great response from both the students and teachers that took part in the event.”
The day focused on workshops and activities run by female engineers from Sellafield Ltd, Jacobs and NNL. The workshops were designed to provide hands on practical engineering experience; Team project management challenge, programming Lego robots, lean manufacture, designing robots for the year 2020 and hydrogen fuel cells.
Dawn James, Sellafield Ltd’s Engineering Director, said: “Events like these provide a great opportunity for the students of today to understand more about the world of engineering and the part that we play. As a company we are keen to help develop the skills of these young people for the future opportunities that lie ahead.”
