High Sheriff's Award
Marion hits the top 10!
Sellafield Ltd employee and Millom Recreation Centre director/trustee, Marion Giles has been presented with the High Sheriff’s award for all her voluntary work and commitment to developing and maintaining a recreation facility for Millom and the surrounding areas.
The previous High Sheriff, Mr James Carr of Cumbria and Iona Frost Pennington from Muncaster Castle, who is the new 2011/2012 High Sheriff, last year visited 80 registered charities throughout Cumbria, of which Millom Recreation Centre was one.
Marion said: “This is quite an honour for me and the centre and certainly a boost for Millom. This now gets us recognised, puts us on the map and will help with any future funding bids.”
The centre opened in 1988. Marion has been involved from the beginning, becoming a director/trustee in 1992. Her duties include securing all funding for the centre, mentoring the new management team as well as ensuring the smooth running of the centre. Marion a keen fitness instructor at the centre also provides fitness and aerobic classes in the evenings.
Marion added:”At the time of the visit I wasn't aware that there was any award! Out of the 80 charities visited he nominated ten for an award.
“They were more than impressed with the facility and service we provide to the community, they recognised the work we are doing, with very little financial help.
“I'm currently involved in making plans to extend the building to accommodate a larger fitness suite, spin bike room and soft play facility for children.”
