L-R: Tom Zarges (URS), Bill Poulson (Sellafield Ltd), Brad Giles (URS)

Sellafield Ltd has received a cheque for £10,000 from URS in recognition of its excellent safety performance - 6.5 million hours worked since the last lost time accident.

The lead company in the consortium heading up the management, operation, and cleanup of the Sellafield site, URS is committed to recognising and rewarding good safety performance at each of their contractor sites.

URS has three qualifications to their contractors to receive an award; 1.5 million hours in less than 12 months; 1 million hours in more than 12 months or 500,000 hours in more than 24 months. All nine operating units at Sellafield and the entire site met the criteria. The money will be split between the nine operating units giving them almost a thousand pounds each to share with their chosen charity.

Tom Zarges, URS President and Brad Giles, Vice President Environment, Health, Safety and Security Energy and Construction came to Sellafield and presented the awards. Fran Williams, now outgoing Sellafield Ltd Director EHS&Q received the cheque on behalf of the site.

Accepting the award she said: “During my time at Sellafield I have witnessed a real commitment to all areas of safety and a genuine drive to continuously challenge and improve our safety performance. It is great for this success to be recognised and for local charities to benefit from that success.”

Brad Giles said: “The President's Award for Safety Excellence is the oldest and most prestigious recognition within URS for safe performance. We have a ‘Zero Injury Goal’ for the company. We are often given excuses for unsafe performance because we work in difficult physical conditions and dangerous industries. This award is proof that the Zero Injuries Goal is attainable and achievable when employees participate in the safety process and management takes a leadership and supportive role.”

Over the past 10 years, more than 275 URS projects in all industries have been recognized for the President's Award. Those project awards represent nearly 575 million hours of safe performance.
