Sellafield Quality Manager Nominated for Award

Tony Colyer, Quality Manager Functions has been nominated as the Chartered Quality Institute (CQI) member of the month for March. This is primarily in recognition of the organisational duties carried out over the last three years to deliver a very successful Sellafield Ltd ‘Business Excellence Day’ at the Sellafield Centre in partnership with the CQI.

Tony has been a member of the CQI for 25 years and gained Fellowship status back in 2000. Tony said: “I was surprised and delighted to receive the nomination from the CQI. Although I played a major role in bringing about three successful events, I was just one of several other individuals who formed a steering group who all had a role, so this nomination is also for them and for senior members of the company who provided support and commitment.

A profile of Tony will appear in February’s edition of ‘Quality World’. In the feature Tony talks about what he’s learned about quality over the years. Getting the ' voice of Quality' heard, particularly in the boardrooms has been an uphill battle. Quality is not perceived as a 'sexy' subject and as a result does not necessarily attract the most appropriate people into the role. There is a general lack of understanding throughout industry on the role of Quality and 'how it can add value to the business.'

The introduction of ISO 9000:2008 has brought the process approach. For me process definition and measurement is fundamental to the success of any business, the old adage of ‘if you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it’ is more applicable in today’s competitive world than ever. I have always tried to promote the principles of Quality Management and Business improvement and the Business Excellence Day event is an excellent opportunity to raise the profile of Quality management and for Sellafield Ltd to demonstrate to the world that they are serious about Quality and improvement.
