The host with the most

The growing reputation of the work carried out by Sellafield Ltd’s Risk Management team has received international endorsement when they were chosen to host a visit to the Sellafield site by a delegation from the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC).

Explaining the reason for the visit Stuart O’Neill, Risk Manager, said: “The United Arab Emirates are looking to build their first nuclear power plant, which will consist of four reactors. They will be carrying out the risk management on the project themselves and are looking to benchmark lessons learnt from various organisations. Sellafield was identified as one of the key nuclear facilities to visit as we have a proven track record on risk management”.

While on the site the delegation received a number of risk management orientated presentations from Mark James, lead risk practitioner and other members of the sites risk team and toured the Thorp Receipt & Storage facility.

Lynn Stalker, Risk Manager, added: “The delegates received a presentation on the sites process for risk management and were particularly interested in the ‘Active Risk Manager’ software that we use. They will shortly be receiving the same ARM software and were interested in how it is used on the site. They may be a further opportunity in the future to share information on ARM and what it can do for them.

“It was a credit to Sellafield Ltd that this delegation had chosen to visit the site and to see what we do here.”

Ed Welsh project risk management, who acted as the host for the visit added: “Sellafield Ltd really did add value to ENEC’s process and the visitors were grateful that they had been steered in this direction to benefit from the level of expertise on the site.

“What impressed me was that we had three high level members within ENEC investing their time to fly for several hours, exclusively for these presentations and site visit.”

“One of our objectives is to become a centre of excellence and to be sought by other organisations for benchmarking exercises and this visit reinforced the positive reputation of the risk management practice and the work taking place on the site”.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation Daniel Wood, ENEC said: “Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation appreciates Sellafield's willingness to share lessons learned on risk management. As a new member of the nuclear industry, ENEC seeks to learn from the past and implement world-wide best practices.”
