Sellafield Ltd help Priestley College students to win awards from the British Science Association for tackling a real-life problem set by the local Nuclear firm
Two teams of students from the College were tasked with devising a method of clearing pipework blocked with a toxic radioactive compound.
The youngsters modelled the problem and built a rig to test their system. After completing a substantial written report and successfully making presentations to a panel of professional engineers, each student was handed a Crest Gold Award from the Association.
Crest - Creativity in Science and Technology - is a work based scheme for students aged 11-19. It promotes work related learning and encourages students to develop skills for use in the real world. Having completed the Engineering Education Scheme the students became eligible for the highest Crest award.
Tutor Adrian Birchenough said: "Our students put in many extra hours working on the Engineering Education Scheme so their success in relation to the Crest Award is very much deserved. The group were set a very complex task from Sellafield Ltd, but took it all in their stride and were able to impress a string of industry professionals with a truly professional presentation and a well written report."
