Sellafield Workers from HLWP (High Level Waste Plants) have raised over £2,500 for Meningitis UK.
HLWP Ryder Cup was contested for the fifth year between Engineering and Manufacturing at Whitehaven Golf Club on Friday 3rd September 2010.
The HLWP golf society was founded in 2005 with approximately 12 members. The concept was developed as an aid to team building and the first Ryder Cup style tournament took place in 2006. A trophy was kindly donated from the Operating Unit and has been used on an annual basis ever since. Due to the success of the tournament it was decided that future events would be used to raise money for charities nominated by the workforce.
The HLWP Ryder Cup is now recognised across the site and guest players from other Operating Units and the contract community are taking part and contributing. This year’s event attracted 64 golfers representing engineering and manufacturing teams, “This was our best turn out yet and some 150 people were there for the presentations, raffle and auction contributing to our best ever total raised”
With the sun splitting the trees the teams set off led by Jim Bell (Engineering) and Steve Lee (Manufacturing). On the day Engineering were just too good, winning 9-7 and retaining the cup for the fifth consecutive year.
Thanks are extended to Sellafield Ltd, Arco, Whitehaven Golf Club, Stobbarts, Shepley, Morson, Costain, Impwood, White Young Green, Rustoleum, Black Beck Hotel, The Richmond, The Brook, Lake District Camper Hire and Dumfries & County Golf Club.
Plans are already in place for the 2011 Ryder Cup to be held on 9th September in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. If anyone would like to get involved or make a donation please contact either Jim Bell on 01946776449 or Steve Lee on 01946785199.
