Engineering awards for Sellafield Ltd students
In addition to winning a top award at the recent National Apprenticeship Awards, a Sellafield Ltd apprentice has also recently received the Best National Certificate Mechanical Engineering Student 2009/10 award.
Rikki Barnes, who works in Legacy Ponds and Silos mechanical design team, picked up his award at the annual dinner for the West Cumbria branch of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers at West Lakes College.
Sellafield Ltd Deputy Managing Director, Operations, Todd Wright joined Professor David MacKay, chief scientific advisor to the Department of Energy and Climate Change and Professor Rod Smith (Elect) Institute of Mechanical Engineers as guests of honour.
Todd presented awards to the best Mechanical Engineering students. He said: "I am pleased to honour these recipients in recognition of their exemplary performance. We face global challenges in many areas, but especially with energy. Rikki and Peter represent the types of engineers with the abilities we will need to meet these future demands."
Rikki said: "I am very grateful for this award and it’s an honour to be recognised by the college and IMechE. I’m enjoying my apprenticeship as I’m receiving an education and gaining work place experience simultaneously, whilst earning a wage. It’s definitely something that I would recommend to others.
"Hopefully this award from IMechE will stand me in good stead in the future as I work towards chartered status."
Roy Swindells, principal mechanical engineer, said: "Rikki has been an exemplary design apprentice who has taken on his responsibilities in the asset care team with quiet confidence and considerable application quickly finding his feet and earning a place of respect. His clear sighted determination to pursue his education whilst gaining engineering application experience in the project design office will form a very sound basis for his eventual aim of full professional status. He is a superb role model to the other design apprentices that are following in his footsteps."
Rikki is a mechanical design apprentice in the final year of his apprenticeship, he is currently studying for a foundation degree in nuclear related technology.
Peter Almond, who also works for Sellafield Ltd, picked up the award for best HNC course.
