Sellafield Ltd receives 'high commendation' at Independent Living Awards

Carl is presented with the award by Shahnaz Ali, Associate Director of Equality and Diversity for NHS Northwest.

Having been shortlisted to receive an award at the Independent Living Awards 2010 in the "Good Practice in Employing Disabled People" category (Public and Private sector), Sellafield Ltd has received a 'high commendation' for its ongoing commitment to equal opportunities.

Sellafield Ltd's Disability Advisor Carl Lewthwaite attended the ceremony in Manchester on 16 June and was presented with the award by Shahnaz Ali, Associate Director of Equality and Diversity for NHS Northwest.

The award was created to recognise an organisation that has shown excellence in the recruitment, retention, and progression of disabled employees. To reach the shortlist stage Sellafield Ltd had to provide the judging panel with evidence of barrier removal in the organisation’s policies, procedures and practices supported by appropriate training.

Organisers describe the event as an opportunity to showcase those initiatives that have led the way in supporting disabled people to be independent. Awards were made to organisations which evidenced innovation and commitment beyond what is currently accepted as good practice.

Speaking after the awards Carl said: "Once again I was overwhelmed with the feedback the judging panel gave us on how they recognised the structure we have within our organisation and how we handle our cases involving disabilities.

"These Awards are about celebrating our progress, recognising and applauding the innovation of our work so far. The Awards also recognise and highlight the personal experiences of workers with disabilities, and how they overcome them.

Being short listed for an award of 'High Commendation' goes far in demonstrating our efforts here at Sellafield."
