Safety success for ILW team
The excellent safety record at Sellafield’s Miscellaneous Beta Gamma Waste Store (MBGWS) continues with teams at the facility reaching 13.7 years without a lost time accident.
The MBGWS facility, which has been operational for 20 years, is the sole facility of its type in the UK, providing safe and secure storage for intermediate level waste. The facility employs a team of 30 people.
Andrew George, manufacturing manager, MBGWS, said: "The Miscellaneous Beta gamma Waste Store (MBGWS) team have set a new and impressive record of 630 days of operations without a minor injury. This sits alongside an equally impressive 5020 days without a lost time accident, that's approaching 14 years.
"The team are justly proud of their safety record and are to be congratulated for their continued safe operations of the facility. The recently launched Peer to Peer observation programme will help MBGWS staff maintain their safety focus and prevent injuries going forward."
Inside the MBGWS facility the team pack different types, sizes and shapes of waste materials and equipment, minimising the volume for storage. The waste packages are then placed into a temperature and humidity-controlled store.
MBGW comprises waste such as ventilation filters and scrap metallic objects that cannot be directly encapsulated. The storage concept is based on the use of large unshielded steel boxes stacked inside a fully shielded vault.
