Following the radiological risk reduction and clean up success that was reached in the Solvent Treatment Plant (STP) at Sellafield in November, site regulators - the Environment Agency have praised the company for its achievment.

More than 2,300 cubic metres of historic medium active (MA) solvent (from early reprocessing operations)was transferred and processed through STP, representing more than 10 years’ work by the teams involved.

Joe McHugh, Head of Radioactive Substances Regulation at the Environment Agency said: “This is a significant achievement by Sellafield Ltd, which was enabled through partnership working with the regulators. We are pleased that the historic radioactive inventory of the Medium Active Tank Farm has been processed and is no longer stored. Storage of radioactive liquor in ageing facilities poses a risk to the environment.”

The Solvent Treatment Plant was built to treat solvent from both the historic inventory and future arisings from the Magnox and Thorp reprocessing plants.
