Capenhurst colleagues attend BP safety forum in Shetland

Three Capenhurst employees have just returned from a trip to the Shetland Isles for a quarterly BP Safety Reps Forum.

John Mather, Joe Waring and Steve Oliver, attended the event, which was designed to share safety best practices across a variety of industries and to take part in safety audits of the BP facilities,

John said: “Safety 1st is gaining a great reputation, not jus within the nuclear industry but also in the aeronautical and petrochemical sectors too. This forum was an opportunity for us to understand how BP approaches safety at its major installations, as well as learning from other industries who attended.

“This was a really valuable information sharing and networking exercise – it’s a must for sharing information between different sites, industries and people. I’ve only been back a day and have already received several emails from people we met who want to share safety information and have factsheets for us to consider using.

“We’ve brought back many lessons from the trip and will be arranging briefing sessions to ensure that we can capture and implement new ideas that will improve our safety performance.

“One key message we’ll be bringing back is the high level of safety awareness that we saw, but also how we believe that our own site safety arrangements are better and we all realised how good we are at what we do.”

Attendees to the forum where split up into seven groups to undertake audits of different parts of the BP facility, which is one of its biggest shore-based support installations. Areas for focus included the landing stages, which receive the ships and also the waste facilities, which treat and dispose of vessel and oil rig wastes.

“One of the really exciting demonstrations we witnessed was a mock sea rescue exercise involving BP helicopters and dummies being winched from the water. We got a chance to observe the exercise and then chat to the crew and have look around the helicopter – sadly we didn’t get a flight. We would like to express our thanks to Stuart Gardiner, Lol Ashford and all the safety reps involved in the forum plus Nigel Martin for the photos.”
