Engineering support radiates success
An undergraduate working on a project supported by Sellafield Ltd has won a prize for the quality of his work. Engineering Design Capability’s CAE Centre of Expertise has supported the successful final year degree project at Manchester University which focused on providing a range of guidance documentation on a technique known as Lasergrammetry.
Dale Barnes picked up the prize for the work that will provide useful data for projects wishing to use the technique. Data generated by the Lasergrammetry technique can be developed using Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) tools into plant "as built" information, in areas where the plant records are out of date or no longer available. As well as providing a challenging and interesting project for the university, the work has provided information that will be of real use to Sellafield Ltd in the future.
Dale’s supervisor Professor Bernard Kelly said: “Thanks go to all the Sellafield Ltd staff that have helped Dale achieve this success. The University are keen to extend this sort of win-win relationship with Sellafield Ltd and we really do appreciate this level of support.”
Sellafield Ltd’s Chief Engineer Tony Green said: “Opportunities like this that enable students to tackle real engineering challenges are not only good for the business but also increase the understanding of what could be our potential workforce of the future.”
