There were plenty of reasons to celebrate for Sellafield Ltd representatives at the recent Excellence in Cumbria Awards 2009.

The company took the Apprentice Employer award at the annual event, organised by the Cumbria Chamber of Commerce and staged at the Rheged Centre, near Penrith.

Sellafield employee David Herbert was a finalist in the Advanced Apprentice of the Year category. David, from Workington, has just completed his Advanced Apprenticeship and is currently working in Transport.

Both categories featured within the Learning and Skills Council’s Learner Awards, which were presented as part of the overall Excellence in Cumbria scheme, titled Profiting Through Skills.

Sellafield Ltd took the Apprentice Employer award in recognition of its long-standing contribution to apprentice training in Cumbria.

Sellafield has a long history of recruiting and training apprentices dating back to the 1950s. It currently employs 170 apprentices, covering Operations, Engineering Design, Craft Maintenance, Fabrication and Control Systems.

David’s success in being named as a finalist in the Advanced Apprentice of the Year category was not his first significant achievement.

Last year, he won the HG Davey Award, which honours the young person showing the greatest endeavour, both in their work and outside work, whilst employed by Sellafield Ltd.

Around 300 guests attended the event, which featured guest speaker Richard Farleigh from the BBC’s Dragon’s Den programme.

David McNerney, Sellafield Ltd’s HR Director, said that he, and the new leadership team at Sellafield, were impressed by the skill base they had seen both at Sellafield and the wider local community.

He praised the Cumbria Chamber of Commerce and the LSC for organising the annual event, adding: “It is through events like this that we remind ourselves of the excellent skill base Cumbria already has and is constantly developing.”

Gen II Engineering and Technology Training Ltd, Sellafield Ltd’s partner organisation for apprentice training, also received a prestigious award for ‘Outstanding Contribution to Learning and Development’.

The awards celebrate the success of those who invest their time, money and effort in learning and development, both individuals and businesses – benefiting themselves and the success of the Cumbrian economy.
