Capenhurst launches Safety 1st campaign for fourth successive year

Capenhurst’s Safety 1st launch this week ensured that safety will be at the forefront of everyone’s minds as the site looks to its new future.

The event, which was attended by all employees and contractors on site, as well as around 20 external exhibitors, kicked off a new year of shop floor-led safety improvements that so far has led to three consecutive years of RoSPA gold medals and excellent contractor safety performance.

Speaking at the launch, which was organised by the Safety Reps, head of site Phil Malem said: “We’re looking at exciting times ahead that will create opportunities for people to excel and succeed. We want to maximise those opportunities and deliver them without any accidents or injuries. This event's all about continuing into our new future the great safety performance that's characterised our past achievements."

Mike Baily, Capenhurst’s head of EHS&Q, was proud of the work that had been put into the event and the interest it had developed.

"The event was superbly organised by our enthusiastic team of Safety Reps, who are a key force in embedding a ‘no harm’ culture at Capenhurst. We’ve been delighted by the level of involvement and interest from our staff and contractors, who have taken the time to visit the stands and talk to our knowledgeable suppliers and regulators.

“We were also keen to share the event with others and I'm really pleased that groups from the nuclear sites at Sellafield, Harwell, Winfrith and from the Airbus Factory at Broughton were able to join us.”

Caron Jones, one of 10 Capenhurst Safety Reps, said: “This is the first of a programme of events for this year and we’re really pleased with the turn-out. Safety 1st has been very successful since its launch three years ago and has become an integral part of the way this site thinks and works. We’ve got a lot of pride in it, so long may it continue.”

Among the exhibits was a 150-tonne crane from supplier Bryn Thomas, which used one of the many areas of open slabs created by safe decommissioning to allow employees a supervised practice at the controls.

The event’s other exhibitors included the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate, St John’s Ambulance, Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service and Health in Business.

The Safety Reps will hold events throughout the year to ensure that the commitment at the site will continue.
