World Quality Event at Sellafield
Efficiency was celebrated on 11 November at Sellafield Ltd’s first World Quality Event held at the Sellafield Centre.
Barry Snelson. Managing Director, welcomed guests to the occasion - ‘a great opportunity to listen to experienced speakers and share and learn from others’ on the day’s theme, efficiency through quality.
In his opening address, Rear Admiral Tim Chittenden, Safety and Assurance Director of BAE Systems and Non-Executive Director of Sellafield Ltd gave a motivational speech on the importance of quality for the future of the nuclear industry.
He said: “Quality has never been more important for Sellafield Ltd or for the British nuclear industry.”
“We now find ourselves at the start of a nuclear renaissance but under very different circumstances to those enjoyed by our forbears. We are faced with a huge legacy of radioactive waste and obsolete first generation infrastructure which the country expects us to decommission and dispose of safely and cheaply.
Meanwhile the world has been sleepwalking into a developing climatic crisis and is only now recognising the value of non-polluting nuclear power, alongside renewable energy sources, as a means of combating global warming, but only if it can be delivered reliably, when and where required, and at a competitive cost including production, through life costs and decommissioning.
The nation is looking to us to learn from our history and to deliver a programme that is “right first time” at every stage in the value chain and is also significantly more cost effective.
We have to use our wits and ingenuity to develop and exploit new ways of working - including novel contracting arrangements, teaming and partnering, and intelligent incentivisation - to ensure that we get the most cost effective and efficient outcome at every stage in the value chain by “building-in” quality across the whole enterprise.
The prize on offer is truly glittering – a safely disposed legacy laying the foundation for a vibrant, affordable and profitable nuclear power generation industry based on a safe and sustainable fuel cycle supporting us and our successors into the 22nd Century."
Over 600 seats at 16 presentations were taken up on the day as employees got the opportunity to listen to top quality speakers, from industry and Sellafield Ltd. There were also 35 stands with internal and external exhibitors all sharing excellence in quality.
