Employees get to grips with the community make-over project

"It always looks so easy on television, but it’s not just about some new pictures and cushions and a vase of flowers to add those finishing touches”, said Nick Connelly after getting involved recently in the make-over business.

Nick was one of a team from Sellafield Ltd’s Engineering Design and Delivery Capability who signed up for an employee challenge to give St Margaret’s Community Centre in Latchford, Warrington a much needed face-lift. The group spent a day at the centre painting walls, ceilings and window frames inside, fences outside, putting up new notice boards and generally giving the place a good tidy up.

St Margaret’s, a registered charity which depends on the goodwill of its users, is an important part of the local community and is used by over 600 people a week for various activities including free computer drop in sessions, pensioner groups, credit union, college courses and morris dancing.

Speaking about the challenge, part of a team building exercise, Paul Adams, head of EDDC, said: “A survey of our engineers highlighted a perceived lack of interaction between the various groups that make up the department. We set the challenge up as an opportunity for the teams to get to know each other in a fun, non-work environment, whilst having the satisfaction of putting something back into the local community”.

Pauline Deans, Community Relations Officer at Sellafield Ltd, explained: “The challenge helps employees to develop leadership, team working and observation skills and puts into practice the principles of Social Responsibility, benefiting both the employees and the community.”

Councillors Steve Wright, centre co-ordinator and Hans Mundry, centre trustee, said: “We really appreciate the support from the engineers. St Margaret’s is probably the most used centre in Warrington and we just don’t have the time or resources to be able to keep on top of maintenance.”
