‘Safety state of mind’ sees Capenhurst win sixth consecutive safety award

Capenhurst nuclear clean-up site has won its sixth consecutive safety award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

Capenhurst’s Head of Quality, Environment, Health and Safety, said: “This is the third year running we have received a gold medal and the sixth consecutive year of being recognised by RoSPA.

“Our success is built on the fact that we operate in safety state of mind, which reflects a healthy unease about hazards and a positive approach to ensuring they are constantly managed. What really keeps us going is a genuine desire to ensure that no-one is harmed by our operations.

“Our unique approach to health and safety, through the Safety First campaign, means employees on the shop floor, not managers, are largely responsible for keeping hazards around the site under control – it’s their hard work which has achieved this award.”

The RoSPA award comes just a month after Capenhurst reached 1,000 days without an employee taking more than three days off work as a result of a workplace accident and this world-class record is largely due to the site’s Safety First campaign.

The RoSPA Awards scheme is one of one of the longest running and most highly respected occupational award programmes. RoSPA Gold Medals are presented to organisations who for a minimum of five years have achieved consecutive gold awards for their occupational health and safety systems, safety culture and control of risk, error, harm and loss.
