Windscale Transition
Today sees the integration of the Windscale site with the Sellafield site. This follows over a year of preparatory work to ensure necessary licence arrangements are in place to allow the transfer to happen smoothly.
The decision to integrate the two sites was taken in October 2006 when the NDA announced that this structure would better suit the overall competition process. A project team was set up with 12 workstreams, each being represented by a lead from both organisations. The team has worked hard to ensure all regulatory and licence arrangements are in place prior to transition.
In October 2007, Windscale entered a period of “Shadow Working” in preparation for today to demonstrate to our regulators that organisational arrangements are in place to support the new licence application. Those arrangements have now been confirmed as satisfying our regulatory requirements. Windscale will continue have its own site licence however Sellafield Ltd will now be the licence holder. Windscale discharge authorisation will also transfer to Sellafield Ltd and Windscale employees TUPE transfer to Sellafield Ltd.
