Work starts on clearing Calder Hall tower rubble
SATURDAY 29 September 2007 saw the safe and successful explosive demolition of the four cooling towers at Calder Hall. Although this was the end of the highly visible demolition work, the arduous task of cleaning up the colossal 20,000 tonnes of rubble was just beginning.
Overseeing the final phase of the project is demolition delivery manager, Kylie Brennan. Speaking about progress at the site, she said “Our contractors, CDI and Thompson’s of Prudhoe, are doing a fantastic job at the former cooling tower site. Work is progressing really well, with over 90% of the concrete from the south towers being processed, and all of the metal rebar being removed and transferred from site for recycling.
“After such a successful demolition it was really important that we retained our focus on safety and maintained the exemplary record the project has had throughout the previous four years of preparation work.”
The concrete rubble is being crushed at the site before being replaced and used to backfill the tower footprints. This work is expected to be completed by the end of March 2008.
