The Future of Nuclear Power? Government Consultation

The government announcement is an exciting major milestone for the nuclear industry, West Cumbria and Sellafield Ltd. Sellafield Ltd will not be directly involved in the build and operation of new reactors as this is expected to be undertaken by electricity generating companies. These companies will consider where and when to invest subject to a range of regulatory approvals, including the acceptability of suitable sites. New build on land adjacent to the existing Sellafield Site may be attractive to these companies, as well as the local skills, experience and support of the local community as voiced through responses to the recent consultation on new nuclear build.

Any decision to build a new reactor at Sellafield by one or more electricity generating companies can also support the long term government vision of the Energy Coast for Cumbria. This would ensure West Cumbria sustains a centre of expertise on nuclear generation, in addition to the area becoming a world class centre for nuclear decommissioning and related activities.
