Human Performance Day hailed a success
Over 700 people took part in Sellafield’s first ‘Human Performance Day’ held on Thursday 6 December, organised to help raise employee awareness about the importance of utilising ‘human performance tools’ in an attempt to minimise human errors and improving operational performance.
The full-day event, which was split into two sessions, was held at Sellafield’s Training and Development Centre.
Ian Berry, Head of Assurance, kicked things off by reminding everyone what human performance is all about: people’s interactions with others; with the plant; equipment and procedures with the overall aim of maintaining safety in the workplace. It is also about recognising that human beings make mistakes and that deploying human performance tools and techniques appropriately reduces the number of mistakes and hence increases safety margins whilst improving operational performance.
The morning session was based around the theme of ‘Inspiring our Leaders’ in which Managing Director, Barry Snelson, spoke to invited attendees, including senior managers, about the importance he places on improving human performance in the workplace.
Other key speakers included Mike Shannon, who focussed on the human performance improvement journey within British Energy, and from Sellafield Ltd Keith Drysdale and Bob Jones.
Keith spoke about the leaders who had inspired him in his career and the importance of strong leadership in delivering human performance improvement. Bob Jones then gave a presentation on the Nuclear Safety improvements that can come from adopting good human performance behaviour.
Having heard from the speakers, the group then made their way round a series of exhibition stands set up to help get the ‘human performance message’ across.
The afternoon session, which was open to all employees, was based around the theme of "Embracing Human Performance". Twenty three interactive stands including the "STAR simulator", "Beat the Clock" and "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" games were set up to help raise awareness of human performance tools and were manned by personnel and contractors from across the site.
Speaking about the event, Ian Berry said: “The Central Human Performance Team have worked very hard to ensure the event was a success. Joe McCluskey and his team ensured the audience came from all corners of the business. Sellafield Ltd, contracting companies and the Highways Agency had developed interesting, educational and interactive stands to get the human performance message across.”
