Calder team complete NVQs
A team from Calder Hall have successfully completed their National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ’s) in Business Improvement Techniques.
The team of seven comprising: Karen Watson, Peter Smith, Joe Fearon, David Armstrong, Richard Cowan, Terry Davidson and Colin Bosanko recently completed the scheme which involves the candidate delivering an improvement to a project or to the workplace, resulting in a delivery of improvements across the site.
So far, this team have been the fastest group on the site to successfully complete their NVQs.
The group were assigned a project in which they had to look at the control of the waste roots from the Reactor Three building. With the help of their mentor, Mike Aistrop, it was decided that the team would use a technique called \'Poka Yoke\' (error proofing) to help solve the issue of the wrong waste bags going into the wrong bins.
The team learnt about data collection and analysis, ‘5S’ (the process of Sorting, Setting in Order, Shining, Standardising and Sustaining), structured problem solving, ‘Kaizen’, team working, health and safety at work, and visual management.
One of the outcomes of the course has been the introduction of compulsory waste handling training for all employees on the Calder site. Colour coded ‘lay down areas’ for the two types of bins (red and blue) and clear visual standard operations on the process of bagging up waste, have also been rolled out across the Calder site.
Speaking about the team’s success, Mike said: “The team worked really hard on this project and delivered a good quality improvement. They were a joy to work with and each member was dedicated to the process and this commitment enabled then to complete the NVQ early. Any member of this team would be an asset to any team on site.”
The NVQs are delivered through GENII with the certificates issued from EMTA Awards Ltd - the awarding body.
