Biodiversity boost

A grant of £1,500 to the Cumbria Biodiversity Partnership has again strengthened Sellafield Ltd’s commitment to environmental issues.

The partnership is an organisation made up of national and local government bodies, conservation charities, businesses and rural interests, which was set up to co-ordinate the production of a local biodiversity action plan for Cumbria.

With the aim of conserving or enhancing a range of threatened species and habitats of both local and national importance, the Cumbria Biodiversity Partnership helps everything from majestic ospreys to fickle fungi.

The word ‘biodiversity’ is a shortened version of the term ‘biological diversity’ and simply means ‘the variety of life on earth’, something that Sellafield Ltd is keen to support in a wider sense than its primary biodiversity action plan.

Beth Roberts, Sellafield’s environmental compliance advisor, said: “Sellafield Ltd is proud to be a corporate member of the Cumbria Biodiversity Partnership. This donation will go towards supporting the important work done by Cumbria’s local biodiversity manager.

“We are committed to corporate and social responsibility and sustainable development, recognising our social and environmental responsibilities. Through schemes such as this we aim to promote the environmental and economic health of the region.”
