Sellafield?s Fire and Rescue team take up top roles

Two members of Sellafield’s Fire and Rescue team have recently taken up top roles in two international organisations, aimed at sharing best practice in the field of fire and rescue skills.

Chief Fire Officer for Sellafield Ltd, Rick Lanigan was recently elected as Chairman of the Executive of the Joint Oil & Industry Forum (JOIFF) the Emergency Services Management Organisation, at the recent AGM held in Durban, South Africa at the beginning of November.

JOIFF, an international organisation with over 100 companies as members in 29 countries, is a non trading and non-profit making organisation, aimed at developing knowledge, skills and understanding of emergency response personnel and to improve standards of safety and of the working environment in which the industry operates. Membership of JOIFF is open to any organisation which is a high hazard industry and/or has nominated personnel as emergency responders who provide cover to industrial/commercial organisations.

Pat Robertson, Group Manager for the Sellafield Fire and Rescue Service was also recently nominated as vice Chairman of the British Fire Service Association – an organisation which represents all members of the fire community, local authority, occupational Ministry of Defence and airports.

The Association, which was formed in 1949, has around 30,000 members world-wide and is extensively involved in all aspects of the emergency services – whether it is personal protective equipment, appliances, or even organising drill competitions.

Speaking about his new role, Rick commented: “I am honoured to have been elected as Chairman of JOIFF. This will lead to stronger links with other occupational Fire & Rescue Services throughout the World, and will enable us to secure world wide benchmarking, learn from others’ experiences and build up a network of like minded professionals from different industries. It will also give us access to comment on any changes in U.K. legislation and have representation in forums nationally.

“By carrying out this role I hope to work as an Ambassador for JOIFF, and also for the nuclear industry in general.”

“Neither of us could have accepted these roles without the continuing support of Sellafield Ltd; it is a testament to the company’s foresight, and desire for continuous improvement that have allowed us to accept these responsibilities.”

Speaking about his role, Pat added: “despite generating extra work, taking up this role sends out the message to the wider fire community that Sellafield’s Fire & Rescue service and in particular Sellafield Ltd are recognised for their involvement at a national level.”

Congratulating them both, Head of Emergency Management, Mick Slater said: “I am very proud that Rick and Pat have been nominated for these roles. It is recognition of the high regard in which they and Sellafield Ltd are held within the UK Fire Fighting Profession.”
