Rheged Conference
The 2007 UK Waste Management and Decommissioning Conference held on 16-17 October at Rheged, near Penrith, attracted delegates from across the world including a strong contingent from Gold sponsor, Sellafield Ltd.
Organised by the British Nuclear Energy Society and the Institution of Nuclear Engineers, the two day event provided information about the new techniques and innovations that are happening within the industry at the moment, as well as providing practical examples of them in action.
Nine well received papers were presented on a wide range of subjects by Sellafield Ltd employees, while Jack Williamson, Fred Shiel and Simon Martin were also chosen to chair learning sessions.
Commenting on the success of the conference, Ben Irons, Pile Fuel Storage Pond, Project Engineering Manager, said: "It was interesting to see the breadth of nuclear decommissioning and waste management work being undertaken beyond Sellafield. The conference included presentations about projects from as far afield as Lithuania, Sweden, Hanford and Fernauld in the USA, as well as from elsewhere within the UK.
“It is clear that the challenges facing Sellafield rank amongst some of the most demanding anywhere and the conference provided an opportunity to share key learning about the approach taken by others.”
The closing address to the conference was given by Pete Lutwyche, Director of Nuclear Decommissioning and Major Projects Group, who said: “Whilst the Sellafield site has achieved many successes over the last few years, some of the biggest challenges are yet to come - whether they are strategic, technical or socio-economic in nature.
“We will only face these safely and successfully with the commitment and enthusiasm of all involved in the industry; employees, customers, supply chain and regulators. It is within our collective capability, and we must build even stronger relationships to ensure success.”
