Contract signed to design 3m? ILW containers
Sellafield Ltd recently signed a multi-million pound contract with Derby-based, integrated services and high technology equipment supplier, DAHER Aerospace Ltd, to design, prototype and test a new 3 cubic metre (3m³) box used to store Intermediate Level Waste (ILW).
An initial batch of prototype containers will be designed, manufactured and tested during 2008. They will be used to store ILW produced as part of ongoing decommissioning and clean up work across the Sellafield site. More specifically they will be used to store ILW from Medium Active Solid Waste Storage Cells and Sellafield’s Dry-Pack Plant, if proven successful.
Speaking about the contract, John Ledys, President of DAHER CSI said: “DAHER’S capabilities in designing and manufacturing nuclear waste containers is based on many years experience with proven methodology, auditable quality and a growing portfolio of nuclear products lying at the heart of our solutions.”
Rob McGarel from Sellafield Ltd’s procurement team added: “DAHER has been awarded this contract following a robust Official Journal European Union (OJEU) compliant competition process. We are confident of DAHER’S ability to produce a high quality container and that their work will go a long way to ensuring that we meet our requirements for the safe and secure management of ILW on the Sellafield site.”
Head of Programme Delivery for Waste Plants, Dave Skilbeck added: “We are delighted that this contract has been awarded. It is part of the fundamental building block which forms our retrieval strategy for the legacy waste plants.”
If the prototype is proven successful, a contract for full scale production of between 20,000 and 30,000 containers for use at the Sellafield site will be tendered. This will be subject to the compliant competition process.
