Chartership challenge for Sellafield mentors
Mechanical engineers aiming to gain further accreditation by joining the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) have been helped by a series of workshops at Sellafield to strengthen their application.
The workshops are designed to give the candidates assistance in making successful applications, in turn benefiting Sellafield Ltd by increasing the level of third-party accreditation for its professional engineers.
Sellafield’s membership programme for IMechE stems back six years, with the current 20 applicants being aided by mock interview sessions, workshops and the advice of a team of chartered engineers from across the business.
The sessions give candidates a head start toward achieving chartered status and a great deal of experience. Previous programmes ran over the past six years have success rates of nearly 100 per cent.
Ken McEwan, head of process improvement for MOX, and IMechE senior coordinator for Sellafield, said: “This process is a win-win situation for both the people involved and Sellafield Ltd. The candidates receive real coaching and experience of the application process, and the resulting new IMechE members provide an increase in the accreditation of our mechanical engineering skill base at Sellafield.”
The overall process takes around four months to complete, with the end of the financial year being the target for the applicants gaining their chartered status. The approach currently covers only mechanical engineers, but it is hoped to be applied to other disciplines in the future.
