Waste teams help cut LLWR pressure

EXCELLENT work across Decommissioning group has seen business improvements achieved by Sellafield Ltd’s waste teams.

There has been a large increase in the number of light duty skips sent to the Waste Monitoring and Compaction Plant (WAMAC) and consequently a significant increase in the number of bags processed through the Waste Handling Facility.

The waste will be compacted, thereby reducing the volume; this will relieve pressure on the Low Level Waste Repository (LLWR). As a result, the number of ISO containers being sent for direct disposal to the LLWR has dramatically reduced and the containers that have been sent have an excellent packing fraction of over 75%.

Additional business improvements have been achieved by teams clearing and exempting steelwork and metals that may in the past have been sent to the LLWR. Currently the amount of metals despatched from Sellafield site by the waste teams are over 300 tonnes against a target of 500 tonnes for the year.

Peter Hanratty, waste task team manager, said: “There has been a year on year improvement and while we are not waste generators, the team’s expertise in handling and segregating waste is coming to fruition. Credit must also go to the plants and projects who are becoming more aware of the importance of effective waste segregation.

“The roll out of waste champions for the separation buildings and projects has given the team a single line of communication to all areas within separation and has meant a better exchange of information through our support office. I would like, this coming year, to roll out this initiative across site and give the team a better knowledge of waste arisings in all areas.”
