MBE for Sellafield's Director
Sellafield's Managing Director, Barry Snelson, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in recognition of his services to the nuclear industry.
Barry, who lives with wife Lesley in Dovenby near Cockermouth, was surprised and delighted with the award. He said: “I hope that it is seen as recognition that Sellafield is making steady progress to my goal of it becoming the most respected nuclear facility in the world, a goal which the whole workforce are working hard to make a reality. I thank them for their continued efforts.
“I accept this honour on behalf of the nuclear industry as a whole and as a joint award with my wife. We celebrate our Silver Wedding Anniversary, next month and we are a team.”
Praising the contribution Barry has made to the company and the industry, BNFL Chief Executive, Mike Parker, said: “Barry has dedicated many years to the company and wider industry. Under his stewardship, Sellafield has made great strides in the new world under the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
“He has also worked tirelessly towards the goal of Sellafield becoming the first operator of a nuclear reprocessing facility to join the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO), an organisation dedicated to improving the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants. This goal has now been realised and is a tremendous achievement”.
Barry will receive his award at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace this summer.
