British Nuclear Group publishes socio economic report for Sellafield

The latest Sellafield Economic Plan (SEP) for 2006/07 has been submitted to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. It builds on last year\'s plan and a 20 year track record of delivering economic innovation creating thousands of jobs and leveraging millions of pounds into the North West of England.

Creating an enterprise environment is a key feature of the plan which explains how the skills and assets at Sellafield could be a major driver of economic regeneration through the delivery of four interconnected themes:

  • Education, training and skills
  • Encouraging enterepeneurial activity
  • The need for diversification
  • Creation of a Nuclear Enterprise Zone at Sellafield

The plan, which also includes the Warrrington area where the Risley engineering site is located, describes the extensive support given to the community and education including the Princes Trust, Weston Spirit, Whitehaven Community Trust, the Engineeering Education Scheme and Young Enterprise.

The SEP concludes that West Cimbria is facing considerable economic challenges as direct employment at Sellafield reduces but there are also opportunities. Developing a responsive and competitive supply chain will be an important element in achieving success.

The plan has not been developed in isolation but in consultation with key players in the region ranging from one-to-one discussions with council leaders, site stakeholder group meetings, suppliers forums and conferences. This level of engagement has been, and will be crucial, to the future development of the SEP and there are plans to widen this to include the views of other key stakeholders. To ensure openness and transparency, progress against the plan will be reported quarterly to the NDA and formal and informal meetings held with local councils and other organiations.
