Safety focus pays off at Capenhurst

Maintaining a firm focus on safety is paying off for Capenhurst as the whole site has recently achieved a full year without a lost time accident (LTA).

This major milestone is one that every single person on the site has contributed towards and along with the site being awarded a ROSPA Gold Medal underlines a significant period for safety on the site.

Terry Grundy, safety manager, said: “We could already claim over three years without an LTA in any of our operations areas. Being able to make a similar claim for the site is as a result of everyone working together to ensure that safety is always maintained as our number one priority.”

A new programme has recently been launched to continue to enhance and improve safety on the site. The plan ‘Safety First at Capenhurst’ incorporates not only the improvement actions seen in previous plans, but also activities that have become part of day-to-day safe working at Capenhurst.

A safety conference brought together management, safety representatives and unions to discuss what the priority activities were to improve safety on the site. The outcome of this discussion resulted in the safety representatives taking on board the development and delivery of the plan and actively encouraging all members of the workforce to get involved.

Safety representative Darren James said: “We\'re looking for people from across the site to take the lead in achieving improvements. There\'s no need to be an expert in a topic - if you want to make a difference and perhaps learn some new skills along the way, talk to your line manager about how you can support the programme.”

Phil Malem, site manager, said: “Developing and delivering the plan in this way is a great step forward for safety innovation on the site and has re-energised the team. I am really pleased with the commitment from everyone and firmly believe that this year\'s plan will be a big step forward in making our site even safer.”
