British Nuclear Group's safety boost for charities
Safety is top of the bill for workers at Sellafield’s Effluents and Encapsulation plants (E&EP). Celebrating a successful twelve months work with no injuries, the teams are now planning to mark their achievement with donations to two local charities: Arlecdon and District first responders and the Wedgewood Centre.
The excellent safety record was maintained throughout the year, during which time the teams also gained almost 100 percent of the available NDA fee. This in an operating unit of more than six hundred people working alongside a further one hundred support staff and many more people from the Sellafield supply chain. The group of plants plays a crucial role in protecting the environment by managing and treating a range of liquid radioactive wastes and conditioning solid intermediate level waste for safe and secure interim storage.
Congratulating the teams, head of Effluents and Encapsulation Steve Livingston said: “We have shown that a zero accident rate is achievable. It doesn’t come about by good luck but by the care and commitment of an excellent and competent group of people – just what we have here in Effluents and Encapsulation plants. I am very proud of everyone who worked together to make this happen - the workforce, the managers, our support services and members of our supply chain - and I know that they are equally as proud.”
Not sitting on their laurels the teams are determined to maintain their safety success. They are targeting specific plant areas where they think that can improve conditions to reduce the likelihood of an accident occurring. This includes improving access to buildings to reduce the possibility of slips, trips and falls, a major source of injury at work.
Clive Brannan, nominating the first responders, said: “E&EP is very much a community – we all work together to ensure we have no accidents and no reportable events. The responders work together in a similar way, so it seemed appropriate to continue the theme of helping each other through the donation.”
Carl Lewthwaite, nominating the Wedgewood Centre, added: “From shop floor to management we all need each other to do the job well. This success shows how excellent teamwork gives even better results.”
