Sellafield?s Engineered Drum Store completed

A successful active commissioning programme, has ensured Sellafield’s newest Engineered Drum Store (EDS3) received the go ahead to commence full operations from the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII).

Following the completion of the construction and inactive commissioning phases by the end of 2005, the required number of drums were imported into the building over a two week period to satisfy the NII’s requirements.

Vital to the continuation of the Low Level Waste Repository retrievals project, EDS3 provides the next generation of storage for the project, as well as for decommissioning activities from the Sellafield site.

Commenting on the approval, Helen Branthwaite, PCM transition projects team leader, said: “Although EDS3 runs using a relatively simple process by Sellafield standards, it is important in the grand scale of things! With existing PCM stores on site at full capacity, EDS3 enables clean-up projects and commercial operations around the site to continue. The new store provides environmentally controlled and secure storage for PCM. It has taken a lot of hard work by a large number of people to reach this stage, but we now have a facility we can really be proud of.”
